SIM Swapping — How Hackers Take Over Your Mobile Number

What it is: Criminals trick your mobile provider into moving your phone number to a SIM card they control. Once they have your number, they can reset passwords and hijack your WhatsApp, Facebook, email, and even banking apps.

Why it’s dangerous

  • Bypasses SMS-based 2FA to access accounts.
  • Lets attackers reset passwords (email, social, banking).
  • Enables impersonation on WhatsApp & Facebook Messenger.

How to protect yourself

  • Set a SIM PIN (ask your carrier) and request an account note: no changes without in-store ID.
  • Use app-based 2FA (Authenticator, Authy) instead of SMS codes.
  • Keep your number private; don’t post it publicly or overshare personal data.
  • Enable login alerts on email, social, and banking apps.
  • Beware of “urgent” calls or texts asking for codes or personal info.

If you think you’re a victim

  1. Call your carrier immediately and reclaim your number; add a port-block & PIN.
  2. Reset passwords on email first, then banking and social accounts.
  3. Switch 2FA to an authenticator app; revoke old sessions/devices.
  4. Warn family/friends not to trust messages from your number.
  5. Contact your bank’s fraud team and monitor transactions.
